On Thursday, June 16, 2011, the Polk County Fire District No. 1 and the Dallas Fire Department graduated the first joint volunteer firefighter academy conducted by the Departments in 2011.

Class 2011-1, which started in January and finished in June, resulted in Polk County Fire District No.1 graduating six (6) volunteer firefighters and Dallas Fire graduating five (5) volunteer firefighters.

To graduate, these volunteer firefighter recruits had to take twenty-three (23) classes ranging from building construction, firefighter safety and personal protective clothing, firefighting techniques, and water supply. Recruits also had classes on hazardous materials, basic first aid and fire suppression systems and fire alarms. Training also included field drill instruction and the opportunity to participate in live fire burns. All together, these individuals committed to approximately one hundred and sixty (160) hours of classroom and field training in addition to passing a written and practical performance tests to become volunteer firefighters and serve their respected communities.

After being congratulated by both Chief Hahn and Chief Cane; in front of their family and friends the recruits were presented with their certifications of completion by their respected Training Chiefs Josh Darland of Dallas Fire and Neal Olson of Polk Fire District No.1. The recruits now have a least one year of probation where they will receive additional on the job firefighter and emergency response training.

Both Fire Departments are accepting applications for the summer 2011 fire academy which starts July 14th, 2011. For further information on this upcoming academy you can contact PCFD No.1 Training Chief Neal Olson at 503.838.1510 or Dallas Fire Department Training Chief Josh Darland at 503.623.2338.
