Polk County Fire District No.1 Hosts Bike Safety Rodeo

Image: PCFD No.1 Division Chief Jeff Donahue and Volunteer Fire Engineer Wally Schmidt prepare this little participant for the big “figure 8” turning control station.On Saturday, October 3, 2009, Polk County Fire District No.1, in conjunction with SAFE Kids Willamette Valley, and local State Farm Insurance Agent Mike Eckman, hosted a free child bicycle safety clinic at Station 90.

Before beginning the course, all participants' bike helmets were checked for serviceability and proper fit. Those helmets that did not meet the safety standard or did not fit properly were discarded and new helmets were given free of charge. Also, PCFD No.1 Volunteer Engineer Wally Schmidt provided his expertise in bike repair and provided a free safety inspection on each bike that came through the course.

Assisted by our on duty crew and volunteers, sixteen (16) kids participated in the event where they learned important bicycle safety laws and had an opportunity to practice their riding skills over a designated course provided by State Farm Insurance. Seven (7) safety stations allowed the participants to perform specific tasks with their bike including safe mounting and dismounting; circling and changing directions; riding in a straight line; correct stopping at an intersection and using correct hand signals.

Due to the success of the event and the fun time had by all the participants, PCFD No.1 will be hosting future Bike Safety Rodeos in the spring and summer of 2010.
