Polk County Fire District No.1 Team
Takes 3rd Place in Bowling Tournament

February 2011

Jeff Donahue
Division Chief/Fire Marshal, Polk County Fire District No.1

The Polk County Fire District No.1
Firefighters Association sponsored team
took 3rd place in this year’s annual
Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department’s 555
bowling tournament. This is the 2nd year in
a row that a Polk County Fire District No.1
team has walked away with a trophy from
this event. Last year the District’s team
took 4th place.

Put on by the Jefferson Volunteer Fire
Department, the 555 tournament consists
of 5 bowlers, bowling 5 games, in 5 hours.
This year, 19 teams from area fire
departments and public service
organizations competed for the 1st place
trophy. All proceeds from this event go to
the Oregon Burn Center.

Though competitive, the event is designed for all skill levels and with the interjection of “special” games such as the Ambidextrous Game (where you have to bowl with your opposite hand), the Monte Carlo Game (prizes for strikes if you have a colored pin), the infamous Gutter Ball Bucket (50 cents for the first gutter ball, 25 cents for the second, and a dollar for back-to-back gutter balls) and the last game played under Cosmic bowling conditions, all the participants had a great time bowling for such a worthy cause.

This year PCFDNo.1 entered two teams; the Association sponsored “Resident’s Best” which consisted of Baird Steptoe, Tyler Bergeland, Alex Scherzinger and Shane Waters; and the District’s team “Firehouse Premium Lager” made up of Jason Cane, Jeff Donahue, Steve Moser, Alex Donahue, and Drew Moser. Being minus one player, the “Resident’s Best” bowled double duty to meet the five player requirement. The “Lager” team made a valiant attempt to defend their last years 4th place trophy and even attempted to intimidate the other teams by displaying their 2010 trophy on a WWF championship belt for all the other teams to see, but unfortunately came up short this year.

With trophies being won the past 2 years, there is no doubt that Polk County Fire District No.1 will be back with teams next year, under pressure to not only defend the previous year’s trophies but bring back the big prize.
